Grampian Foods meat workers take joint action across six plants

Over 1,400 workers at Grampian Foods, one of the country’s biggest food producers, struck last week.

The workers, members of the T&G union, struck for 24-hours at six sites over pay, pensions and the increasing casualisation of the company’s workforce.

There were walkouts at Grampian’s factories in Cambuslang near Glasgow, Coupar Angus in Perthshire and Fairview near Edinburgh.

Also affected were the group’s sites at Llangefni in Anglesey and Wiveliscombe in Somerset, as well as the Grampian-owned Welsh Country Foods – also in Anglesey.

Grampian supplies meat to some of Britain’s major supermarkets.

According to the T&G, managers brought in strikebreakers to the factory in Cambuslang.

Scott Foley, of the T&G, said, “Agency staff are regularly used but we suspect the company has brought in extra workers.

“If that has taken place it is illegal and, if we can find concrete evidence, a complaint will be lodged with the Department of Trade and Industry.”

The T&G is also investigating claims that union stewards have been intimidated by local management in certain plants.

The union has promised swift action if such claims are proven.
