Workers and campaigners protested in Cairo last Sunday demanding a rise in the minimum wage.
Some protesters held up loaves of bread, saying the current wage did not even cover the cost of bread and beans.
Demonstrators chanted slogans including, “Workers are going to sleep hungry,” and “Keep raising prices—watch the country go up in flames.”
Protests and strikes are rising. The Wall Street Journal reports, “In addition to the minimum wage issue, more localised labour disputes in recent months have sparked independent strikes and labour actions.
“Protesters have begun staging continuous sit-ins on the sidewalks surrounding the parliament building.”
