Setback for Scottish teachers

Scottish teachers narrowly voted to accept a two-year pay freeze and changes to their pay and conditions last week.

Following a hard fought campaign, 43.8 percent of teachers still voted to reject the deal.

Despite the union campaigning against cuts in public services, the general secretary said that teachers took a “mature” decision by voting to take “a share of the pain in order to address the current funding crisis”.

These statements are worrying. The further attacks on the horizon, combined with the conduct of the ballot, have caused a lot anger.

A meeting of activists last weekend discussed the deal. It agreed to launch a renewed campaign to resi st all the cuts and to fight for more democracy and accountability in the union.
