2,000 jobs to go at BBC

BBC bosses have announced plans to axe 2,000 jobs over the next five years.

The so-called “Delivering Quality First” plans mean 9 percent of jobs at the corporation would be cut.

This comes on top of 7,000 jobs already lost at the BBC since 2004.

New staff will be expected to work for substantially lower salaries, and on worse terms and conditions.

But every BBC worker will be affected. Massive re-grading plans raise the prospect of heavier workloads, and whole departments being forced to re-apply for their jobs.

National Union of Journalists general secretary Michelle Stanistreet said, “If the BBC presses ahead with these changes strikes across the corporation seem inevitable.”
