Southampton council workers reject pay offer

Workers in the Unison, Unite and Ucatt unions have voted to reject Southampton City Council’s latest proposal for pay cuts.

The offer would have meant a three-year pay freeze for all staff and pay cuts of up to 5 percent for some. It would also have blocked career increment increases and cut car allowances by 20 percent.

Some 2,400 workers were balloted. Workers in Unite and Unison have already struck repeatedly against the pay cuts, and will strike on

30 November. Ucatt members in local government will strike on the day too.

Workers’ resistance in Southampton has been inspiring and determined.

Stewards are set to meet in early December to discuss further action.
