Unilever’s chief executive Paul Polman likes to present himself as a champion of “equitable capitalism”.
He lectures other bosses on the need to engage with the Occupy movement—or risk losing customers. “Some people sometimes accuse me of being a socialist,” he said, “but I am a capitalist at heart.”
And why wouldn’t he be? In 2010 he received over £2.4 million in salary, bonus and share options. His total remuneration is 285 times that of the average Unilever worker.
