BBC Birmingham workers strike against job cuts

Around 100 angry BBC workers at Mailbox Birmingham began a 24-hour strike on Wednesday of last week.

The strikers, in the Bectu union, are fighting a planned move to Bristol which would cut jobs.

They held signs naming the programmes they represented—Hairy Bikers, Countryfile and See Hear. Even an “Archer” was present!

One striker said, “The proposed move to Bristol will mean the Midlands is totally unrepresented. It’s the closure of the network.”

A Bectu rep added, “They are outsourcing everything. Soon there’ll be nothing left.”

The strike was rounded off by a noisy protest outside the council followed by a rally addressed by other media unions, Midlands TUC and local councillors.

Other workers sent messages of solidarity and PCS union members joined the protest.
