Liberal Democrat party leaders are terrified of the flak they could take at their spring conference in Newcastle this weekend.
People are rightly angry at the Lib Dems for backing Andrew Lansley’s health bill.
Nick Clegg and Baroness Shirley Williams wrote a pleading open letter to party members last week. It claimed that the proposed legislation “is now undoubtedly a better bill because of the Liberal Democrats”.
They claim that Lib Dem amendments will safeguard the NHS as a public service.
But senior Tories disagree. One Downing Street spokesperson described the amendments as “not significant amendments—they are areas where reassurance is required”.
