Education round up

Campaigners against academies won two victories last week.

Derby City Council met last week and decided not to support schools that sought to become academies, after teachers had campaigned.

And governors at Boldon School in South Tyneside rejected plans to become an academy. This followed workers in the NUT, NASUWT and Unison unions backing strikes, and a campaign by South Tyneside Public Services Alliance.

Meanwhile teachers in the NASUWT union plan to walk out at West Derby School in Liverpool on Thursday of next week against a governors’ decision to turn their school into an academy.
