Teachers: time to get the vote out

The NUT teaching union will ballot members for action over pensions, pay and workload from Monday of next week.

The NASUWT teaching union is also balloting for coordinated action in the autumn. Joint strikes by these two unions can shut the majority of schools in Britain.

Over 100 teachers attended the local associations’ national action conference in Liverpool last Saturday. It was called following frustration at the union’s failure to call national action since November.

Sheena from Nottingham described how strikes had increased NUT membership. She added that the percentage of schools with NUT reps had more than doubled.

NUT national executive member Anne Lemon spoke about the exciting possibility of 85 percent of teachers on strike together. We must fight for a yes vote on a massive turnout to make this a reality.
