Hundreds protest at fascist Marine Le Pen in Cambridge

Some 200 students, school students, trade unionists and campaigners protested at the Cambridge Union Society today, Tuesday, against French fascist Marine Le Pen.

The leader of the Front National was invited to speak there at 4pm today.

Le Pen’s bodyguards had to force her through the crowd to shouts of “Nazi go home” and “No Nazis welcome here”.

Unite Against Fascism (UAF) called the protest. Cambridge University Student UAF backed it along with the National Union of Students’ Black Students’ Campaign.

Cleo Yvel, who lost her family in the Auschwitz concentration camp in the Second World War, addressed the crowd.

Cleo said, “How dare you come here Marine Le Pen? Your father had the audacity to tell the world that the concentration camps were a ‘mere detail of history’.”

Cleo reminded the crowd of the disastrous consequences of not acting against fascism.

Weyman Bennett from UAF said, “It’s a disgrace that a fascist such as Marine Le Pen is allowed to speak at the Cambridge Union.

'She’s attempting to garner respectability before the European elections and open the door for the British National Party.

'We have to take a stand. She's a Nazi like her father—they both deny the Holocaust in order to repeat it.”

Le Pen’s visit is just four days ahead of an event planned in the town by the fascist English Defence League (EDL).

UAF has called a counter-protest.
